It is early September, but one of Somerville’s loudest, brightest and most recognizable December traditions is already beginning to move from holiday memory into event planning. The Somerville Fire Department’s Holiday Lights Parade has not yet been given a publicly announced 2026 date. Planning, however, has begun. And if the parade follows the schedule it has used in recent years, there is a very strong candidate for the calendar: Saturday, Dec. 5. That date remains a projection, not an announcement. Recent editions have consistently landed on the first Saturday in December: Dec. 2 in 2023, Dec. 7 in 2024 and Dec. 6 in 2025. The first Saturday of December 2026 is Dec. 5. Until the Somerville Fire Department or Borough of Somerville formally confirms the date, Raccoon Media Network will treat Dec. 5 as the working date and update the advance when the official schedule is released. The pattern is worth watching because the parade has grown into much more than a line of decorated fire trucks. Borough records describe a community event that brings emergency responders from across New Jersey into Somerville, sends illuminated apparatus down Main Street and through neighborhood streets, and draws residents and visitors out to the curb after dark. In a 2024 resolution recognizing parade coordinators Joe Rodriguez and Dave Bowden, the borough called the event a cherished tradition that attracts visitors from outside Somerville and provides entertainment for thousands of residents along the route. The 2025 borough approval scheduled the parade from 6 to 10 p.m. at 170 E. Main Street, with an afternoon road closure on Veterans Memorial Drive to support staging and operations. Borough meeting minutes later described a dusk start at about 6 p.m. Those details do not establish the 2026 plan, but they provide a useful picture of how the event has recently operated: staging begins well before the lights switch on, and the parade becomes a moving nighttime display once it reaches the street. That moving display is the point. Fire apparatus, rescue vehicles, law-enforcement units, community entries and other vehicles have traditionally been transformed with lights, decorations, music and holiday themes. The parade does not stay confined to a single downtown block; past borough minutes specifically describe it traveling down Main Street and through Somerville neighborhoods, turning the town itself into the viewing area. There has also historically been a community-service component attached to participation. St. John’s Episcopal Church in Somerville has supported the parade through collections of toys and gift cards for distribution in the community, while past parade materials have included recognition for decorated emergency vehicles, floats, organizations, homes and businesses. Those elements should be treated as past practice until 2026 participation rules are published, but they help explain why the event feels less like a conventional procession and more like a town-wide holiday project. There is an additional reason Dec. 5 would make sense on Somerville’s holiday calendar. The Downtown Somerville Alliance has already scheduled its 2026 Holiday Jubilee for Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m., with the annual tree-lighting celebration, live entertainment, trolley rides, downtown promotions and Santa. If the Lights Parade follows on Saturday, Somerville would effectively open December with a two-night holiday weekend: the downtown celebration on Friday, then the fire department’s illuminated parade on Saturday.
