Christmas in July has officially escaped containment.
South Plainfield’s long-running downtown celebration is returning on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and South Plainfield Avenue. The event is now being promoted under the perfectly adaptable invitation to “Fall into the Christmas Spirit,” keeping the holiday theme while acknowledging that the calendar has moved on without it.
That may actually work in the event’s favor. Christmas in July is built around the deliberate mismatch of holiday imagery and summer weather: Santa, decorations and seasonal cheer dropped into the middle of heat and humidity. By late September, the same idea lands differently. The tropical twist can stay, but now it arrives alongside the first signs of actual fall, when people are already beginning to think about pumpkins, cooler evenings and the long slide toward the holidays.
The event is organized by the South Plainfield Business Association, whose stated mission is to support and promote the borough’s local business community. Association president Cathy Herman is also the author of the Sept. 16 update announcing the new date, making the notice more than a secondhand calendar listing: the schedule change comes directly from the event’s organizer.
An organizer-controlled FestivalNet listing describes the event as a free downtown craft show with commercial and retail vendors, crafts, fine art and fine craft exhibitors. That listing still shows an earlier Sept. 20 date and a 4-to-8 p.m. window, so the newer Sept. 27 announcement should be treated as the current schedule. FestivalNet lists roughly 65 exhibitors, giving some sense of the size of the street-fair component even if the final lineup may change.
The event has deep local roots. South Plainfield borough records from 2013 described Christmas in July as a way to encourage residents to support local businesses, with vendors, music and community groups participating downtown. School records from 2016 also described students taking part through band, drama and other activities. The format has changed over the years, but the basic idea has remained remarkably consistent: pull people into the center of town, give local organizations and businesses a place to be seen, and make the gathering festive enough that it feels like more than a shopping event.
This year, the oddity is the date itself. A celebration named for July will now happen five days after the official start of fall. That is either a scheduling problem or an accidental improvement, depending on how seriously anyone planned to take the name in the first place.
South Plainfield appears to be choosing the second option.
