Middle Township is not saving Halloween for one night in 2026. The township has built nearly a full week around it, beginning with a community-wide house decorating contest, rolling directly into the 28th Harvest Fest on Mechanic Street and finishing with the annual Halloween Parade.
Taken together, the schedule gives residents several different ways to participate. Families can spend an evening driving through the township to see decorated homes, make a full Saturday of hayrides, music, food and costumes downtown, then return a few nights later for the kind of old-fashioned community parade that turns Halloween into something bigger than a single round of trick-or-treating.
The Halloween Decoration Contest Turns the Township Into the Attraction
Oct. 23-27, 2026 | 5-9 p.m. nightly | Participating homes throughout Middle Township
The Halloween Decoration Contest gets the week started on Friday, Oct. 23, but unlike a festival with a single gate or stage, the attraction is spread across Middle Township. Participating homes will have their displays available for viewing nightly from 5 to 9 p.m. through Tuesday, Oct. 27.
That makes the contest as much a self-guided Halloween tour as a competition. The fun is in seeing what neighbors do with porches, yards, windows, lights and whatever collection of skeletons, ghosts, pumpkins and homemade monsters they have accumulated. It also gives families several nights to make the rounds instead of forcing everyone into one narrow viewing window.
Residents interested in participating can register through Middle Township’s recreation system. The township’s current event flyer directs entrants and anyone with contest questions to the online registration portal.
Harvest Fest Takes Over Mechanic Street
Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026 | 10 a.m.-5 p.m. | Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House
The biggest single event of the week arrives Saturday, when Middle Township’s Harvest Fest fills Mechanic Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 2026 festival is the 28th edition, continuing a long-running fall tradition built around children’s activities, hayrides, craft and food vendors and live music.
It is the kind of festival designed for wandering rather than following a rigid schedule: browse vendor booths, stop for food, send the kids toward the games, take a hayride and circle back toward the music. The downtown Cape May Court House setting gives the event a street-festival feel while still keeping the programming heavily family-oriented.
Costumes also get their own moment. The 28th Harvest Fest Costume Contest is free and includes categories for children age 2 and younger, ages 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10. Online registration runs through Oct. 23, but families can also register on the day of the festival at the library steps until noon. Children’s judging begins there at noon.
Pets are invited into the competition, too. The pet costume category is scheduled for judging at 3:30 p.m., which means the festival may offer the rare autumn sight of elaborately dressed children in the afternoon followed by equally elaborately dressed dogs a few hours later.
The Week Ends With the Halloween Parade
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026 | Parade begins at 7 p.m. | Cape May Court House
After five nights of decorated houses and a full Saturday festival, Middle Township closes the run on Wednesday, Oct. 28, with its annual Halloween Parade. The parade begins at 7 p.m., bringing costumes and community groups back into the center of Cape May Court House.
For groups and residents who want to be in the parade rather than watch from the curb, participant registration is free and remains open through Oct. 26. Middle Township’s recreation listing says performers will line up behind the library in parade order, with performances taking place in front of the library after the parade is complete. The event is not judged, keeping the emphasis on participation rather than competition.
The recreation schedule blocks out the evening from 6 to 9 p.m., allowing time for staging and post-parade activity, while the township’s official special-events page lists the public parade start at 7 p.m.
One Halloween, Three Different Ways to Join In
What makes Middle Township’s Halloween week work is that the three events do not duplicate one another. The house decorating contest rewards the residents who turn their own properties into seasonal attractions. Harvest Fest creates the big daytime gathering, with food, vendors, hayrides, games, music and costume competition. The parade then shifts the spotlight back to the community itself.
It also gives families some flexibility. A household that cannot spend all day at Harvest Fest can still tour the decorated homes another evening. A child who wants to compete in costume can do that Saturday and still march or watch Wednesday. Someone who mainly wants food trucks, crafts and live music can treat Harvest Fest as a fall festival without needing to build the rest of the week around it.
By the time the Halloween Parade steps off Oct. 28, Middle Township will have spent six days steadily building toward it — front yards glowing after dark, Mechanic Street busy on Saturday and costumes returning for one more public lap through town. Halloween may technically still be three days away, but Cape May Court House will already have had a full week of it.
