Avengers: Doomsday does not need much help becoming an event. Marvel is sending the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wakandans, X-Men and other corners of its multiverse toward the same collision, Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom, and Anthony and Joe Russo are back behind the camera for a film designed to push the long-running cinematic universe toward its next major turning point.
Smodcastle Cinemas is adding one more reason to treat the first night as something different from an ordinary multiplex showtime. On Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m., the Atlantic Highlands theater will host Watch with Kev: Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans the chance to see Marvel’s new crossover film with Kevin Smith in the room. Disney lists the film’s official theatrical release for Friday, Dec. 18, making the Smodcastle event part of the Thursday-night opening wave when the speculation finally stops and everybody in the theater knows exactly the same amount again.
A Marvel movie with someone who has actually written Marvel
Smith’s presence makes more sense here than simply attaching a celebrity host to a superhero screening. Long before owning a movie theater, he was part of Marvel’s comics history. Smith wrote the 1998-99 Daredevil arc Guardian Devil with artist Joe Quesada, the first major Marvel Knights Daredevil story, and later wrote Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do. Marvel credits him across its creator catalog for that work.
That gives the night a useful overlap between fan culture and creator culture. Smith has spent decades talking publicly about comic books, superhero movies and the particular emotional logic of fandom, but he has also been on the page side of the equation. Watching a movie this large in a theater he operates collapses several versions of that relationship into one room: reader, writer, filmmaker, exhibitor and fan.
Watch with Kev has become its own kind of movie night

The announced cast includes Downey, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Tom Hiddleston, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu and a long list of returning Marvel performers. Smodcastle currently lists a 165-minute runtime.
The scale is almost the point. Doomsday is arriving after years in which Marvel’s interconnected storytelling became both its great advantage and one of the things audiences argued about most. A giant crossover invites a different kind of opening-night audience because the room contains years of remembered movies, theories, preferred characters and unfinished story lines before the first frame appears. Whatever the film turns out to be, the first audience gets the rare pleasure of encountering it before consensus has hardened.
Watch with Kev: Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands. The theater does not use assigned seating for the event and explicitly recommends arriving early for a preferred seat.
