Robot Fighting Is Having a Moment Again

For anyone who loved the early days of BattleBots and lost track of combat robotics for a while, National Havoc Robot League is a very good reason to look again. NHRL is building the ladder, media reach, builder culture and professional structure that could turn robot fighting from a familiar spectacle into a durable sport.

I loved BattleBots from the early days, which means robot fighting occupies a very specific place in my brain: part engineering competition, part demolition derby, part television spectacle, and part proof that somebody will always look at a machine and wonder whether it could be improved by adding a spinning weapon.

Then, as happens with a lot of things you genuinely enjoy, I lost track of it for a while. I knew combat robotics had not vanished, but I was not following the leagues, the builders or the evolution closely. So finding National Havoc Robot League felt less like discovering an entirely new idea than walking back into a room I remembered and realizing everyone inside had spent the intervening years building infrastructure.

NHRL, founded in 2018, describes itself as the world's largest robot fighting league. Its competitions use custom-built remote-controlled robots across multiple weight classes, with builders designing machines to survive, maneuver and disable opponents inside enclosed arenas. The basic appeal will be immediately recognizable to anyone who grew up watching televised robot combat. What is more interesting is everything NHRL has built around that familiar core.

This is no longer just a question of whether two machines can produce three entertaining minutes of sparks, shredded armor and extremely expensive regret. NHRL is trying to create a sporting ecosystem: open competitions, rankings, professional qualification, international pathways, broadcast distribution, builder development, youth programs and, beginning in 2027, a formal Pro League with teams and a season structure.

That is the part that got my attention. Robot fighting did not disappear while I was looking somewhere else. It organized.

The spectacle was always easy to understand

Combat robotics has one enormous advantage over many emerging sports: the central premise does not require much explanation. Two machines enter a cage. Each builder has designed for offense, defense, mobility and survival. The match ends when one machine can no longer continue, or judges decide which robot controlled the fight more effectively.

That simplicity is deceptive because the engineering underneath it can be extraordinarily sophisticated. NHRL says its builders use CAD, precision machining, 3D printing and advanced manufacturing to create machines that have to survive forces their designers are intentionally generating against one another. A weapon has to be destructive without destroying the robot carrying it. Armor has to absorb damage without making the machine too slow. Weight has to be treated like a budget. Repairs happen under time pressure between fights. Driving matters because even the most terrifying weapon is useless if the builder cannot put it where it needs to be.

NHRL currently organizes major competition around 3-pound, 12-pound and 30-pound classes at the Pro Tour level. That scale is smaller than the heavyweight machines many television viewers may associate with BattleBots, but smaller does not mean gentle. The physics remain deeply committed to making sure something eventually flies across the cage.

More important for a growing sport, NHRL appears to understand that the engineering cannot become a barrier to spectators. Its 2026 rules revisions explicitly say judging and weapon definitions should produce outcomes that are exciting and understandable to both longtime participants and first-time viewers. That is an important piece of sports design. Hardcore competitors need technical legitimacy; casual viewers need to understand why somebody won.

A sport grows when both audiences can watch the same contest and feel that it makes sense.

NHRL is building a ladder, not just a show

The most convincing sign that NHRL should be watched as an up-and-comer is its competitive structure. The organization runs Open events where builders can enter, climb rankings and qualify for the Pro Tour. At the professional level, invited fields compete in 3-, 12- and 30-pound classes, with rankings and qualification feeding toward the Pro World Championships.

That matters because a sport needs somewhere for ambition to go. A great one-off event can attract a crowd, but a league becomes more durable when a newcomer can see a path from curiosity to participation, from participation to ranking, and from ranking to a higher competitive tier.

NHRL is also widening that pathway beyond its own building. In a June update, CEO Kelly Biderman said the organization was formalizing relationships with regional and international leagues so competitors could earn NHRL XP points or receive access to Pro Tour wildcard opportunities. The same update described summer camps and school curriculum work with GrowingSTEMS, along with plans for tools that would make it easier for people to find local leagues and begin competing.

This is the less glamorous part of making a sport real, which is exactly why it matters. The highlight reel is the robot getting launched into a wall. The infrastructure is making sure there is another builder learning how to construct the robot that might launch it next year.

For people who remember robot combat primarily as television, that grassroots-to-pro ladder changes the mental model. The television product may introduce the sport, but the league cannot depend on television alone to manufacture competitors. It needs workshops, garages, school programs, local tournaments and builders who start small enough to learn without requiring a professional machine shop on day one.

The builders are becoming the athletes

NHRL is also making a smart bet on the people standing behind the robots. In its 2026 growth plan, the organization said it intends to invest in media training, social support and profile-building for top competitors, with the explicit idea that builders should become recognizable personalities who can attract fans and sponsors.

That may sound obvious, but it is a meaningful shift in a sport where the machine naturally steals the camera. A beautifully engineered robot has a name, a shape, a weapon and a visual identity. It is easy for the object to become the star while the person who spent months designing, machining, wiring, testing and repairing it becomes secondary.

Traditional sports rarely work that way. We care about the athlete because performance becomes more compelling when it belongs to somebody whose decisions, history and personality we understand. NHRL appears to be trying to build the same relationship without pretending the robot is incidental. The machine remains the instrument of competition, but the builder becomes the person whose strategy and technical judgment give it meaning.

That is particularly useful in combat robotics because the human story is unusually rich. Builders have different design philosophies. Some chase weapon power. Some value reliability. Some are exceptional drivers. Some develop strange solutions to very specific mechanical problems. A machine that looks ridiculous may contain a brilliant answer to a question the audience did not know existed until the fight starts.

Once viewers know who built it and why, the destruction becomes more than destruction. It becomes an argument between engineering ideas that happens to conclude with a great deal of noise.

The media strategy looks like a sport trying to escape its niche

NHRL is also taking distribution seriously. In May, DAZN announced a multi-year agreement to carry the NHRL World Championship Pro Tour internationally, with the 2026 Pro Tour events available free on the platform. ESPN has also carried NHRL programming, including Robot Fighting Championship broadcasts on ESPNews.

Those deals matter less because they certify that robot fighting has "made it" than because they lower the friction of encountering it. Emerging sports often face a discovery problem. The existing fans know where the streams are, who the competitors are and when the tournaments happen. Everyone else has to care enough to go looking.

Putting NHRL on large sports platforms changes that relationship. Somebody browsing DAZN or landing on an ESPN listing does not need to arrive with a preexisting commitment to combat robotics. The sport gets a chance to interrupt them.

NHRL has also invested heavily in its own content systems. The league says its Norwalk operation uses a broadcast facility capable of ingesting more than 100 video and audio feeds, while individual fights are rapidly made available online for replay and sharing. That is modern sports logic: the live event matters, but so does the clip somebody encounters later without knowing the tournament result, the rankings or even the name of the robot involved.

Robot combat is almost unfairly well suited to that environment. A ten-second clip of a machine being thrown across an enclosure does not require a standings graphic before it becomes interesting. Short-form media can provide the invitation; the league structure gives the curious viewer somewhere deeper to go.

A sold-out room is evidence, not the whole story

NHRL's next major public appearance is a September 12 Pro Tour stop at Terminal 5 in New York City, with 48 robots scheduled across three weight classes. The event is sold out, which is worth mentioning because it demonstrates something about demand. It is not, however, the reason to write about NHRL.

A sold-out event can be a moment. What makes the league more interesting is that the organization is using 2026 as a bridge toward a larger professional structure. NHRL says it plans to launch a full Pro League in 2027 with formalized teams, a season format, events in major cities and a clearer property for sponsors and broadcasters to follow.

That is the up-and-comer story. The question is not whether a room in Manhattan can get loud when robots start hitting each other. I have no difficulty believing that. The question is whether NHRL can convert those moments into repeatable fandom: people who know the teams, understand the rankings, follow builders between events and care about a season rather than a single spectacular collision.

The organization is approaching that problem from both directions. Open competition keeps the sport porous enough for new builders to enter. The Pro Tour creates separation at the top. Partnerships with local leagues expand the feeder system. Media distribution expands discovery. Builder-focused storytelling gives audiences people to follow. A planned Pro League provides a future container for all of it.

None of those pieces guarantees that robot fighting becomes a mainstream sport. Together, however, they look much more like a growth strategy than a novelty act.

What BattleBots taught a generation was that engineering could be theater

For longtime BattleBots fans, there is something satisfying about seeing this happen because televised robot combat always contained more cultural potential than its simplest description suggested.

The obvious appeal was destruction. Something got hit, flipped, cut, burned or immobilized, and the audience reacted accordingly. But the deeper hook was that the violence had been designed. Somebody had to imagine the weapon geometry, calculate the tradeoffs, choose the materials, build the chassis, wire the controls and then put the entire theory into a box with another person's theory.

It made engineering theatrical without making engineering fake. The spectacle was not pasted on top of the technical work; the technical work created the spectacle.

NHRL seems to understand that inheritance while updating the structure around it. The league talks openly about STEAM education and accessibility, but it does not sanitize the competitive appeal in order to make the educational point. The robots are still there to fight. The sparks, broken parts and frantic repairs are not embarrassing side effects of the learning experience. They are what make the learning experience worth watching.

That balance matters. There are plenty of worthy programs designed to teach robotics. NHRL is trying to build a sport in which becoming better at robotics is useful because there is somebody on the other side of the cage trying to wreck your work.

I may have some catching up to do

Finding NHRL was a useful reminder that fandom does not always wait for you. You can love something, stop paying attention for a few years and come back to discover that the interesting people kept building anyway.

There is plenty I would need to learn before pretending I understand the current competitive landscape. I do not yet have favorite NHRL builders, strong opinions about 12-pound weapon geometry or a grudge against a particular judging decision. Give me time.

What I do recognize immediately is the underlying appeal. Robot fighting still sits at the strange and wonderful intersection of engineering, sports, personality and sanctioned mechanical chaos. NHRL has taken that appeal and started building the scaffolding around it that could support something larger: a grassroots pipeline, a professional tier, global distribution and a 2027 league structure designed to make individual contests matter as part of a continuing season.

That is enough to put it firmly on the watch list.

For those of us who loved BattleBots, the important news is not that robot combat survived. It is that while some of us were away, another generation of builders kept improving the machines, the broadcasts and the sport around them. NHRL is not asking to be treated as nostalgia. It is trying to become what comes next.
